First Episode of ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 2 Debuts on Apple TV+

“Ted Lasso,” the most watched program on Apple TV+, saw its season two opening episode debut on the streaming service today.

Ted Lasso sees Jason Sudeikis reviving his “Ted Lasso” character that first debuted during the 2013 NBC Sports English Premier League coverage. In the ‌Apple TV+‌ show, Sudeikis plays a small-time college football coach from Kansas who is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.

The second season has been widely anticipated and was promoted by Apple CEO Tim Cook during the company’s April event. The show regularly takes pride of place at the top of Apple’s official ‌‌Apple TV+‌‌ website, and also has a line of official merchandise associated with it.

For its first season, “Ted Lasso” received a record-breaking 20 Emmy nominations, the most of any comedy in its first season. It also won multiple awards, including a Golden Globe for Jason Sudeikis, who plays the show’s namesake main character.

The second season of the show, which consists of 12 episodes, sees Sarah Niles joining the cast. New episodes will be released every Friday on ‌‌‌‌Apple TV+‌‌‌‌. Apple has already renewed the show for a third season, which the creators of the show have hinted may be its last.

Jon Stewart Promo for Upcoming Apple TV+ Show Makes Fun of Billionaire Space Race

Jon Stewart today shared a promo for his upcoming Apple TV+ show “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” which is set to launch this September.

The three minute video that was shared on Twitter features a comedy skit making fun of tech company billionaires and space aficionados Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Richard Branson.

The full video can be watched over on Twitter, and we’re not going to embed it here on the site because it’s very not safe for work.

Apple May Be Interested in Acquiring A24 Film Studio

A24, a film and TV studio that works with Apple, recently explored a possible sale and Apple was one of the interested parties, according to a new report from Variety.

Movies that include “Hereditary,” “Moonlight,” “Lady Bird,” and “Midsommar” have come from A24, with A24 also responsible for Apple TV+ content that includes “Mr. Corman” and “On the Rocks” along with and upcoming films “Sharper,” “The Sky is Everywhere,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Bride,” and more.

A24 is asking for $2.5 billion to $3 billion, and has been talking with potential buyers for over 18 months. According to Variety, it is not clear if those discussions are ongoing, as a source close to the company says A24 is now focused on expansion.

Some of the sources that spoke to Variety said that Apple and A24 discussed a potential acquisition when their multi-year film deal was announced in 2018, but other sources said that the two companies held discussions much more recently.

Apple appears to be looking to expand its ‌Apple TV+‌ offerings, and recent rumors also suggested that Apple has expressed interest in purchasing Hello Sunshine, which is Reese Witherspoon’s production company.

If Apple does ultimately end up purchasing A24, it could be folded into Apple Studios, Apple’s own production company that is involved with some of its ‌Apple TV+‌ shows.

Apple TV+ to Offer Russian-Language Content Through New First-Look Deal

Russian-language shows are likely headed to Apple TV+, as Variety reports that Apple has signed a first-look deal with AR Content, a production company led by Ukranian and Russian producer and director Alexander Rodnyansky.

A scene from Russian film “Loveless” produced by Alexander Rodnyansky

The deal will reportedly provide Apple with an opportunity to secure Russian-language and multilingual shows for Apple TV+, set both inside and outside Russia, with both Russian and international writers and directors.

“Apple is extremely interested to explore the possibilities in that part of the world,” said Rodnyansky, who received Academy Award nominations for the 2014 film “Leviathan” and 2017 film “Loveless.” “It’s going to be the very first of all the global streaming platforms to sign a strategic partnership with a company with Russian roots.”

Apple TV+ is gradually expanding its non-English content. Israeli spy thriller series “Tehran” has primarily Hebrew dialogue, and last month, Apple greenlit contemporary thriller “Liaison” as its first French-language series.

Apple in Talks With NFL for Sunday Ticket Streaming

Apple is interested in streaming rights for the National Football League’s “Sunday Ticket” package, reports The Information. Apple has had discussions with NFL executives, but the NFL is also speaking with TV networks and other tech firms as well.

Sunday Ticket streaming content currently airs on DirecTV, but it is up for auction and should Apple acquire the rights, out-of-market fans will be able to watch non-prime time games from all 32 NFL teams on Apple TV+.

DirecTV pays somewhere around $1.5 billion to broadcast the Sunday Ticket games, but its deal with the NFL expires in 2022, paving the way for other networks to bid on the package. The NFL is looking to get more money when establishing a new deal.

ESPN parent company Disney is said to be interested in acquiring the rights for the ESPN streaming service, and according to The Information, Apple is not seen as a serious contender for the rights because it has been reluctant to invest money in entertainment programming.

That said, Apple has an ongoing relationship with the National Football League, and in 2020, hired James DeLorenzo to run a sports division for ‌Apple TV+‌. DeLorenzo previously negotiated Amazon’s deal with the NFL to stream live games.

Apple previously held talks with the Pac-12 conference about live streaming college sports, but nothing ever came of those talks and there continues to be little sports-related content on ‌Apple TV+‌.

Acquiring the rights to the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package would draw a wider audience to ‌Apple TV+‌, appealing to those who live away from their favorite football teams.

Apple TV+ Shares Trailer for Comedy Series ‘Mr. Corman’ Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Apple TV+ today released the trailer for “Mr. Corman,” a new comedy series created by, directed by, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The first two episodes of the 10-episode first season will debut on August 6, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday.

“Mr. Corman” follows the days and nights of Josh Corman (played by Gordon-Levitt), an artist at heart but not by trade.
