U.K. Smart Home Firm Hive Rolls Out HomeKit Support for Active Line of Products

Hive, the U.K. smart connected home company backed by British Gas, has quietly added Apple HomeKit support to its range of smart home products.


First spotted by iMore, the support is part of a software update that began rolling out late last week. When the soft launch is complete, Hive’s ‌HomeKit‌ compatible accessories include all its Active Smart Plug, Heating, and Connected Lighting products.

The development comes some time after Hive said it was working on supporting ‌HomeKit‌ in its product line. The company mad the original announcement after rolling out Siri Shortcuts support in June 2019.

To get Hive products up and running with ‌HomeKit‌, owners will need the latest Hive Hub or the Hub 360, both of which can be updated to version 10.28.0 of the software via the Hive app.

‘BBC Together’ Service Lets UK Users Enjoy BBC Content With Others Remotely

The BBC has launched a new experimental online service that lets users watch or listen to BBC programs, prodcasts, and radio with others over the internet at the same time.


Called BBC Together, the online tool is available on Taster, the BBC’s experimental platform, which can be accessed via any web browser. The way it works is that one user finds the link of a program or video clip they want to watch with others – from BBC iPlayer, Sounds or Bitesize, BBC News and Sport websites – and then they paste it into the BBC Together service.

This creates a new group session, which can be shared via a link with friends or family. Each link can currently be watched by up to 50 participants, and the host user can pause, rewind, and fast-forward the content, or choose a new program for everyone to watch at once.

If the idea sounds familiar, you’re probably thinking of Netflix Party, an extension for Google’s Chrome web browser that lets users watch Netflix films and TV shows simultaneously. Apple and Google are said to be in a “standoff” with the UK’s health service over its plans to build an app that alerts users when they have been in contact with someone with coronavirus.


Apple and Google announced on Friday that they are working together on Bluetooth technology to help governments and health agencies reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus around the world.

Apple says that user privacy and security will be central to the design of the project, which will use a decentralized API to prevent governments from building a surveillance-style centralized database of contacts.

However, according to The Guardian, that means if the NHS goes ahead with its original plans, its app would face severe limitations in its operation.

NHSX – the British health service’s digital innovation unit – reportedly wasn’t aware of Apple and Google’s project before it was announced, and it now looks like the usefulness of its own app will be severely hampered or even rendered non-functional if it doesn’t implement the protocol.

That’s because without adhering to the Apple and Google API, a contact tracing app won’t be able to access Bluetooth when it’s running in the background, and would only work when the app was open and the phone unlocked.

Similar limitations have been demonstrated in Singapore’s contact tracing app, TraceTogether, which requires the user to leave their phone unlocked to work properly. The app has a three-star rating on the App Store and has been installed by just 12 percent of the country’s population.

For its part, a spokesperson for NHSX denied claims of a “standoff,” telling The Guardian: “This suggestion is completely wrong. Everyone is in agreement that user privacy is paramount, and while our app is not dependent on the changes they are making, we believe they will be helpful and complementary.”

The UK’s NHS has confirmed plans to use Apple’s contact tracing technology in an upcoming app that will warn users if they’ve recently been in contact with someone suspected to be infected with coronavirus (via BBC News).


Britain’s health secretary Matt Hancock, who announced the move at the government’s daily pandemic press briefing, said the NHS was “working closely with the world’s leading tech companies” on the initiative.

The basic idea behind the app is that people who have self-diagnosed as having coronavirus will be able to declare their status in the app, which will then send an alert to anyone who has recently been close to them for an extended period of time.

“If you become unwell with the symptoms of coronavirus, you can securely tell this new NHS app,” Hancock explained.

“And the app will then send an alert anonymously to other app users that you’ve been in significant contact with over the past few days, even before you had symptoms, so that they know and can act accordingly.

“All data will be handled according to the highest ethical and security standards, and would only be used for NHS care and research.

“And we won’t hold it any longer than is needed.”

According to the report, a pre-release version of the software will be tested with families at a secure location in the North of England next week.

There isn’t any sign-in requirement or profiles to set up when you launch the app, so getting started is pretty painless.

UK Telecoms Providers Remove All Data Caps on Home Broadband Services

Britain’s big telecoms providers have agreed to lift the data caps on all fixed-line broadband services to help people isolated at home following the coronavirus epidemic, reports Reuters.


The companies, which include BT, Virgin Media, Sky, O2, Vodafone, Three, and TalkTalk, committed to support and protect vulnerable customers during the pandemic following talks with the government and telecoms regulator Ofcom.

The ISPs are also introducing additional measures, which include helping customers who find it difficult to pay bills because of the viral outbreak, improving mobile and landline packages, and prioritizing repairs for vulnerabile customers.

“It is essential that people stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives. This package helps people to stay connected whilst they stay home,” Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said in the government statement.

The U.K. government last week imposed strict measures on public movement, including social distancing, a ban on gatherings of more than two people, and the closure of all shops selling non-essential goods.

People have also been told they should only leave the house to shop for basic necessities, exercise, medical needs and traveling to work if they can’t work from home. The measures are expect to remain in place for at least 13 weeks, and possibly longer.

The decision to raise the standard debit card contactless limit to £45 is said to have been taken following consultation between the retail sector and the finance and payments industry, and follows similar increases in several other European countries over the past week.

The changes were reportedly already under consideration by the industry, but the process has been expedited as part of the industry’s response to the global viral pandemic to support consumers who choose to pay using contactless.

Stephen Jones, CEO of UK Finance, said:

“The payments industry has been working closely with retailers to be able to increase the contactless payment limit to help customers with their shopping at this critical time for the country.

“This will give more people the choice to opt for the speed and convenience of purchasing goods using their contactless card, helping to cut queues at the checkout.”

UK Finance notes that the new limits could take some time to be introduced across all retailers, but eventually they’ll offer people another way to pay shopping bills without handling money or touching payment terminals, which should help in the fight against the current viral outbreak.

Of course, in the meantime U.K. consumers spending more than £45 can still use Chip & Pin, cash, and biometric-authenticated mobile payment systems like ‌Apple Pay‌, where accepted.

Disney+ has been available in the U.S. for a while now, but subscribers should note that there will be some content differences in the European offering because of licensing issues.

Due to the anticipated high load on the continent's broadband infrastructure because of a surge in remote working, Disney+ is following other digital video services by streaming at an intentionally lowered bitrate, so picture quality won't be as good as some viewers will be expecting.

It's unclear how long Disney intends to limit video quality, but Netflix said last Thursday that it plans to implement similar measures for 30 days, following a request from the European Union.

The launch of Disney+ has been delayed in France by two weeks on request of the French government – Disney+ will now launch in the country the week of April 7.

Disney says the service will launch later this summer in additional Western Europe markets, including Belgium, the Nordics, and Portugal. Disney+ has been available in the Netherlands since September, when it launched there as a pilot trial.

U.K. iPhone Reseller Carphone Warehouse to Close All 531 Stores

Long-standing mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced that it will close all 531 of its standalone stores on Britain’s high streets next month, with around 60 percent of staff (2,900) set to lose their jobs.


As part of the same company that owns Currys PC World, Carphone Warehouse has 350 mini-shops inside 305 of those stores, but these will not be affected by the changes.

The standalone stores will close on April 3. The move is not related to the coronavirus outbreak, but rather the result of the changing mobile market, according to the firm.

Group chief executive Alex Baldock told BBC News that customers were increasingly buying online and from its big stores, which sell computers and TVs as well as mobiles.

“They can’t find all this in the small mobile-only stores that are one-twentieth of the size; they’re visiting these less and these stores are losing more money as a result,” he added.

The company says the closures represent around 8 percent of its current selling area, and the move is “an essential next step” towards making its mobile business a sustainable and profitable category.

“We have to take the difficult decisions to throw our weight behind the parts of the business that the customers are showing us they want… that’s with the big stores and that’s online.”

Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Retail merged in 2017 to become Dixons Carphone, in a bid to fend off tough competition from internet players like Amazon. However, the online strategy has failed to pay dividends and the merged entity has lost £90 million a year as a result.

Almost 40 percent of staff (1,800) affected by the closures are expected to take new roles in the business, the firm said.
